Indigestion and causes of indigestion (Dyspepsia) :
Indigestion is a symptom rather than a disease, and can be caused by a variety of factors such as ...
- food intolerance
- overeating
- excessive alcohol intake
- stress
- acid regurgitation
Long standing indigestion could cause digestive tract problems and needs to be investigated to determine the reasons for the continuing indigestion symptoms. This chronic indigestion may also indicate some other disorder such as gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gall bladder disorder or hiatus hernia.
Symptoms of indigestion vary according to each disturbance, but for simple indigestion are confined to abdominal discomfort / stomach bloating with pain, nausea and gastric reflux.
Acid regurgitation / acid reflux is one of the most common causes of indigestion and often presents with symptoms such as heartburn. The heartburn (has nothing to do with the heart organ) is caused by irritation due to the acid reflux from the stomach into the tube connecting the stomach to the mouth (the oesophagus). This may be called a 'hiatus hernia' although a variety of other names can also be used to describe the same symptoms. Also see Oesophageal Stomach Acid Reflux / Heartburn.
