Diabetes & Blood Sugar Levels

Diabetes - sugar diabetes :

Sugar diabetes is a metabolic characterised by the inability to utilise carbohydrates.
A decrease of insulin production by the pancreas gives rise to a high level of blood sugar (glucose) which is eliminated in the urine by the kidneys. With low Insulin production, the body cannot convert food into glucose, the body's main energy source.

One in five people go blind because of diabetes. The genetic factor is important as it may run in families due to a defect in the immune system. Women who have German measles during the first 3 months of pregnancy can have a child who develops diabetes during adolescence.

In the more severe cases of diabetes in younger people, insulin administration is needed or ketosis and diabetic coma are possible.
The milder for of diabetes found in older people can be managed with a diet change and hypoglycaemic agents.

    Some symptoms of diabetes :

      • excessive thirst
      • loss of weight
      • urine of high specific gravity
      • weakness
      • loss of tactile sensation in the finger tips
      • boils may occur

Diabetics are subject to glaucoma and detached retina of the eye. There is also a high incidence of cataracts of the eye. Muscle cramps, itchy skin and poor wound healing are also evident.

Type 1 Diabetes :

This type of diabetes is suffered by people whose insulin-producing cells have been destroyed and who produce no insulin at all and will always require insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes :

Known as adult-onset diabetes. Occurs in middle life if insulin production by the pancreas becomes insufficient to carry out it's normal functions.
Maturity-onset diabetes is usually associated with obesity and poor eating habits over many years.

Diabetes makes diabetics susceptible to infections (such as itching of the vulva in women) and coronary heart disease is quite common (especially in women), who may develop atherosclerosis at an early age.
